They toured the museum and the rest of town, then had dinner at the Thai restaurant she’d mentioned. When they arrived back at the Candle Beach Hotel, the sky was dark, but after the fun they’d had, he didn’t want their date to end.

“Would you like to see the turret at the top of the hotel? We just finished it and the widow’s walk this past week.” He looked over at her hopefully.

She gazed up at the third floor of the hotel. “Sure. I’d love to see it again.” She eyed him pointedly. “Last time I was there, I didn’t get to finish seeing it because someone called me down before I could go outside.”

He laughed. “Sorry about that. I didn’t know if you were a vandal or something. All I knew was that someone was in the hotel and I didn’t know who.” He hopped out of the car and came around to her side, opening the door for her.

“Thanks.” She flashed him a smile, then took the arm he offered. “Is Amelia in town?”

“She went to Seattle for the day to pick up some furnishings.” He checked his watch. “I think she’ll be back in a few hours. Why, do you think we need a chaperone?” He paused, hoping she knew he was teasing.

“I don’t know, what do you have planned?” She mock-glared at him. “Wait, was this all part of the plan? To get me out here alone?”

“No, no.” He didn’t want her to think that. “I honestly thought it would be nice to go up in the turret tonight. It’s such a clear night.” He stopped and examined her face. She was smiling up at him – she wasn’t upset. He breathed a sigh of relief.

“I think you’re right. It is a perfect night to view the stars.” She followed him into the hotel and up the winding staircase to the turret, stopping in front of the windows. “Oh, wow.”

“Beautiful, right?” He came behind her and reached forward to open the door to the widow’s walk. They moved outside, standing together at the railing. It was chilly in the night air, but worth it.

The stars shone brightly overhead, and the moon glinted off the ocean, casting silvery strands of light on the tips of the waves. Except for the sound of the surf, the air was quiet.

“I feel like I’m in some other world,” Maura whispered. “It’s so gorgeous.”

“It is. We ended up having to replace all of the floorboards up here and install new windows, which was costly, but I think it was well worth it.” He edged closer to her and put a tentative arm around her shoulder. She snuggled into him, and he slid his hand down her arm to rest at her waist. She sighed happily and turned into him until both his hands were on her waist and she was gazing up at his face.

“I had a really nice time with you today.” She rested her hands on his arms.

“Me too.” He brushed some strands of hair away from her face and his eyes met hers.
